The story

Enter by the Arch of Titus and walk the empire's main street: Caesar's cremation altar (still receiving flowers after 2,070 years), the intact Senate house, the Rostra where Cicero spoke (and where his head was displayed when oratory lost), the Vestals' lily-pond house.

Climb the Palatine: emperors built so extravagantly here that 'Palatine' became 'palace' in every European language, yet Iron Age hut foundations from Romulus's century sit yards away. The Farnese Gardens terrace has the Forum panorama; it's also the shadiest corner of the park.
