The five coffee rules
- 1."Un caffè" means espresso: €1.20 to 1.50 standing at the bar. Sitting can triple it.
- 2.Cappuccino is a breakfast drink. After lunch, order caffè or macchiato. (Nobody will stop you. They will simply know.)
- 3.In busy bars, pay the register first, then repeat your order at the counter with the receipt.
- 4.There is no to-go culture: coffee is a 90-second standing ceremony. Join it.
- 5.Caffè corretto is espresso corrected with grappa. Legal at breakfast. Encouraged after the Boboli stairs.
Spotting fake gelato
Real gelato lies flat in covered steel tins, in muted natural colors: pistachio is olive-drab, never neon. Fluorescent mountains whipped high with air are tourist bait. If you can see it from 50 meters, walk 50 meters more.
